At Beach Park Middle School, a redesigned advisory period is helping ensure students have dedicated time during the school day for the support, skill-building, and enrichment they need to succeed.
New this year, WIN Time, short for “What I Need”, and sixth-grade Academy provide purposeful opportunities tailored to students’ grade level and individual needs. The program centers on three key areas: targeted support, academic growth, and meaningful connections with staff and peers.
Building Strong Habits in Sixth Grade
For sixth-grade students, Academy focuses on building the skills and habits that support a successful transition to middle school.
Throughout the week, students have opportunities to strengthen organization and planning skills, participate in social-emotional learning and safety lessons, review their grades and academic goals, complete missing work, and build relationships with their peers.
The predictable weekly structure helps sixth graders develop greater independence while learning the routines and habits that will support them throughout middle school.
Giving Seventh and Eighth Graders What They Need
For seventh- and eighth-grade students, WIN Time provides different opportunities based on students’ current academic needs and progress.
Students may receive targeted reading or math intervention, additional support in core subjects, dedicated time for grade recovery or test retakes, or a quiet space to study and complete work.
Students who are in good standing also have opportunities for enrichment, including physical activity, peer mentoring and tutoring through National Junior Honor Society, and projects that allow students to explore topics in culture, STEM, and the arts.
Student needs are reviewed regularly so that WIN Time can provide the type of support or opportunity that is most beneficial at that time. The program includes targeted academic cycles ranging from three to six weeks for some interventions and supports.
